Crystal Flash: A Century of Fueling the Midwest

1932: Humble Beginnings

The story of Crystal Flash begins in 1932, when John E. Fehsenfeld started a small fuel delivery company in Indianapolis, Indiana. Armed with a single old truck and a rented storage facility, Fehsenfeld laid the foundation for what would become a major fuel provider in the Midwest.

1936: A Move to Grand Rapids

In 1936, Fehsenfeld's son, Frank, moved the business to Grand Rapids, Michigan, where he expanded its services to include wholesale petroleum distribution. This marked a significant step in Crystal Flash's growth and diversification.

1938: Entering the Retail Market

Just two years later, in 1938, Fehsenfeld and his brother, Jack Jr., ventured into the retail fuel market with a small filling station in Ionia, Michigan. This move would eventually lead to a network of gas stations across the region.

1940: Home Heating Services

Crystal Flash's commitment to serving its customers extended beyond transportation fuels. In 1940, the company entered the home heating business, offering heating oil to residents in the area. This new service line would prove to be a valuable addition to Crystal Flash's portfolio.

A Century of Growth and Innovation

Over the next several decades, Crystal Flash continued to grow and evolve. The company expanded its operations, diversified its product offerings, and adapted to changing market conditions. Key milestones in its history include:

  • 1975: Introduction of self-serve gasoline
  • 1982: Establishment of a used oil collection department
  • 1988: Entry into the propane business
  • 1989: Expansion into commercial fleet fueling
  • 2002: Sale of retail gas stations
  • 2010: Recognition as "Carrier of the Year" for safety performance
  • 2016: Transition to an employee-owned company

Today, Crystal Flash remains a leading fuel provider in the Midwest, serving customers across Michigan and several areas of Indiana, Illinois, and Ohio. The company's commitment to quality, reliability, and customer satisfaction has helped it build a strong reputation and a loyal customer base. As Crystal Flash approaches its 100th anniversary, it looks forward to continuing its legacy of fueling the region for many years to come.
