At Crystal Flash, we’re passionate about giving back to the community and supporting organizations that are making a difference. One of Crystal Flash’s main areas of community support is Veterans Assistance. We’re thrilled to shine a spotlight on our new partner, K9 Camo Companions, a non-profit organization dedicated to making lifelong matches for Veterans and companion animals.

K9 Camo Companions

K9 Camo Companions (K9CC) was founded on the belief that companion animals can provide Veterans with invaluable peace, comfort, and support. They understand the unique challenges that Veterans face and are committed to matching them with companion animals that can meet their individual needs.

The Executive Director at K9CC, Dr. Lori Vorpi, has “always had a passion and commitment for volunteer service.” A passion that started young and is unrelenting. “My mission and pledge to our West Michigan Veterans and their pets is to do everything in my power to help both the Veteran and the pet find peace and contentment in their lives together.”

The organization’s mission is “To unite and support Veterans and pets for the enhancement of both of their lives.” Since 2016, its team of dedicated volunteers has assisted over 300 Veterans in West Michigan with 500+ pets. They actively support more than 20 existing companions through their monthly pantry in Sparta, which is offered as a free service, and assist over 75 Veterans monthly with training, veterinarian needs, and resource connections.

Ensuring a Solid Match

The matching process is rigorous and ensures that both the human and the pet are a great fit and supported to succeed. This process includes:

  • Interviews and visits with the Veteran in person to learn their needs and lifestyle to find a tailored match.
  • Working with local animal rescue shelters to find a pet that will provide the Veteran with the companionship they desire.
  • Working directly with a local veterinarian near the pet to make sure the pet is fully vaccinated, spayed/neutered, microchipped, and licensed.
  • Providing the supplies the pet will need at their new home including food, bowls, bed, leash, collar, kennel, treats, and toys.
  • Connecting the match with an obedience trainer to receive appropriate training. (When applicable, providing a six-week training course and evaluation, certifying the dog through the AKC Canine Good Citizen® (CGC) program.)
  • Ensuring ongoing training, monthly pantry access, and support for the Veteran and their dog.

K9CC aids Veterans who already have a companion by providing access to their monthly pantry, assisting in CGC program training, and helping connect Veterans to many resources they might need through their existing network.

The Impact of Companionship

The impact of K9 Camo Companions’ work is undeniable. Companion dogs can provide Veterans with a sense of purpose, companionship, and unconditional love. They can also help to reduce symptoms of anxiety, depression, and PTSD. These benefits are well documented, and many of the Veterans K9CC has supported have opened their hearts for a second connection after providing a lifetime of love for their first pet.
