As a general rule, DEF consumption runs about 4% of diesel fuel consumption. That means for every 25 gallons of diesel your vehicle burns, expect to use roughly 1 gallon of DEF.

• Multiply that number by 0.04
• That’s your estimated annual DEF need in gallons

For example, a fleet that burns 50,000 gallons of diesel a year will go through approximately 2,000 gallons of DEF. At that volume, buying jugs from a retail store is neither practical nor cost-effective.

Actual consumption will vary depending on the age of your equipment, how hard it’s working, and the type of engine, but the 4% figure is a solid starting point for planning.

The Problem with Buying DEF by the Jug

For low-volume users—say, a single vehicle that runs occasionally—picking up a 2.5-gallon cube from an auto parts store or c-store works just fine. But for anyone running a serious operation, retail DEF purchasing creates a handful of real headaches:
